Pitch Wars 2013 – Pick Me As Your Coach!

What I’m Looking For:

I am so excited to be a Pitch Wars mentor again! This year I’m looking for YA science fiction and fantasy, along with other high concept genre YA (mystery/thriller, steampunk, horror, etc). I’m also looking for light, funny, and romantic YA contemporary.

If your book has nerdy characters, spaceships, explosions, sword fights, shocking twists, swoony romance, rock music, laugh out loud dialogue, and/or kick ass women and men, pick me!

I also love diverse, disabled, and/or LGBTQ characters, so send them my way!

I am not the coach for you if you have a quiet or literary novel, a novel in verse, a dark contemporary or issue book, a fairy tale re-telling, or a historical novel. I'm also not really into paranormal, urban fantasy, dystopian, or post-apocalyptic novels. Those genres are just not my specialty, sorry.

Also, I’m only doing YA for Pitch Wars, so if you have a MG, NA, or Adult novel please check out the other amazing coaches!

Why You Should Pick Me:

I’m a YA author represented by the awesome Kate Schafer Testerman of KT Literary. I’ve interned for literary agent Jill Corcoran for over a year, and have also interned for Entangled Publishing and worked as an editor for a small press publisher. I’ve been on lots of different sides of the publishing world and can help you get your work in the best shape possible.

Last year in Pitch Wars I worked with both my mentee and my alternates, and two of them have already signed with agents (Stephanie Garber and Teresa Yea). Plus, four books I’ve critiqued are coming out in 2014 from major publishers:
THE LOST PLANET by Rachel Searles (Feiwel & Friends, 1/28/14) - Upper MG Sci-fi
CAMELOT BURNING by Kathryn Rose (Flux, 5/8/14) - YA Steampunk Fantasy
PUSH GIRL by Jessica Love and Chelsie Hill (St Martin's Press, 6/3/14) - YA Contemporary
LOOP by Karen Akins (St Martin's Press, Fall 2014) - YA Sci-fi

Some random things about me:

  • Every week I mentor at-risk teens and teen parents in writing, to help them graduate high school and go to college. I also volunteer with a dog adoption group to find new homes for rescued dogs.
  • I’ve been to Comic Con six times. One year I dressed up as Katniss, and another time I got to meet Joss Whedon!
  • Music is my other passion (after books and writing), and I have three guitars, which I’m re-learning to play.
  • My husband is from England and has a sexy accent, rides a motorcycle, makes chain mail, and knits. We live in Los Angeles with five fluffy rescue dogs.
  • My most recent purchase was a Legend of Korra and Harry Potter mash-up t-shirt. It’s pretty awesome.

Look around my blog, and if you think I'm the right coach for you, send me an application on December 2!

Also, if you think I'm a good fit, check out Stephanie Garber - she was my Pitch Wars mentee last year and is now a mentor herself! We have similar tastes and I can vouch for her awesomeness.

Please visit Brenda's site for more info on the participating agents, and all the submission guidelines. Good luck!
