2013 Goals

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday! My Christmas was lots of fun - my mom brought her dogs over, so we had seven dogs total in the house! Above is a shot of four of them sleeping next to the Christmas tree. (With their new panda toy photobombing them.)

And now we're in 2013! I'm partly sad that the holidays are over and partly excited for the possibilities and hope that come with a new year. I made some writing goals last year but didn't blog about them, but this year I'm going to make sure you all hold me accountable! And at the end of 2013 it will be fun to look back and see how I did on these goals.

Goal #1: Finish revisions on current book.

I'd like to get my current book, 24 HOURS IN THE FUTURE, in good shape to send to my agent within the next couple months. This is my #1 priority right now.

Goal #2: Write two new books.

Last year I had a goal of writing one new book,  which I accomplished,  but this year I want to push myself and try to write two new books. This might be tough - but I'm only talking rough drafts here, and thanks to WriteOrDie.com I know I can write a rough draft quickly now. I'd also like to revise at least one of these books so it's in good shape.

Goal #3: Read at least 52 books.

This was my goal for 2012 also and I ended up reading 60 books. I feel like a book a week is doable with my workload and the amount of manuscripts I read for friends or as an intern. Also, when I aimed for 100 books a year I read books too quickly, like I was checking them off a list, instead of savoring and enjoying them. I made myself slow down last year and was much happier because of it.

Goal #4: Attempt to transition to a career in publishing.

I'm keeping this goal vague because there are numerous ways this could happen, and some things are out of my control, like job openings or book sales. But my goal is to keep trying to make writing and/or editing my full-time career instead of a second job. I did make some progress on this in 2012 by signing with my agent and interning with Jill, so I hope to continue that progress and accomplish even more in 2013.

Do you have any goals for 2013? Did you do a goals post? Let me know!

  1. My goals are to stay in the Honor's College (maintain a 3.25 GPA or higher) at my university, stay on the Dean's List (Maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher. My current GPA is 3.78), get an agent (probably won't happen, but I can hope), and finish revising the second book in my series and write the third one. Also, I want to remain single throughout 2013, which should be cake with my track record.

  2. Oh wow, so many dogs!! Cool hehe :)

Good luck with your goals. I haven't really thought about mine yet, but I want to exercise weekly and maybe buy a new car?

  3. Seven dogs! They must have had a blast together. :)

Good luck with your 2013 goals! I'll be rooting for you. I have the same reading goal. A book a week is a nice reading pace.

  4. What a great picture! They all look so fluffy and cuddly just laying there.

Your writing goals are awesome! And I think they are totally doable. :)

I'm trying to do the one book a week goal too.

As far as writing goals, I'm going to keep it simple(ish). My goal is to polish my current wip, so that it is good enough for an agent to say, "I love this! I want it!" I'd also like to write one new book this year.

  5. I want to know what you're currently writing, if anything, so I tagged you! You can chose to head over to my blog and check it out (it's the post titled http://caseyroach.blogspot.com/2013/01/blog-hop-extravaganza-elleganza.html), or not. It's up to you :-)

  7. I want to sign with an agent. This was my same goal as last year. I like the idea of writing two books. I tend to write fast so two books a year for me is not enough. I'd say three or more. I need to finish the current WIP I'm doing and finish the last one but it's turning more into a novella at this point I think. I, too would love to make writing a full-time career and lose the day job. Good luck with your goals!

  10. Thank you for sharing your goals with us, Elizabeth! I will be cheering for you and can't wait to see what wonderful things 2013 will bring for you! My goals are actually pretty similar :) I hope to complete two MS's this year (*maybe* three since one is a rewrite of a story that's been lingering with me for awhile), and made my first ever goal of reading & reviewing 3 MG/YA books a month (LOVING this already!!). Also, the picture of the sleeping dogs is so cute and cozy and makes me want to curl up too <3
