Class of 2012 YA Superlatives: Best In Show

2012 YA Superlatives

Today is the last day of the 2012 YA Superlatives! I hope you enjoyed it. In the previous posts I tried not to repeat books, but today's has turned into a bit of a John Green love fest. Sorry about that.

Favorite Cover

I love how the cover shows off each girl (including the Japanese one!) and you get a sense of who they are from their clothes. I also love all the details - the clockwork in the corners, the city of London above them, the sunburst pattern behind them, etc. You can tell the artist really took the book into consideration!

Cutest Couple
Hazel and Augustus from The Fault In Our Stars

I want to give them both hugs.

Most Likely to Succeed (Or, pick a Printz Winner)

If it's not one of these two books I will be shocked.

Most Likely to Make You Miss Your Bedtime (The book you just couldn't put down!)
Ten by Gretchen McNeil

I haven't mentioned this book yet for some reason, but I had a great time reading it and couldn't put it down!

Best Repeat Performance (Your favorite sequel or follow-up)
Perception  by Kim Harrington

Another one I haven't mentioned yet, but I thought it was even better than the first book in the series! I hope there is a third book...

Favorite Finale or End of Series Novel

So sad to see the series end, but I think the ending was very satisfying and wrapped things up nicely.

Romance Most Worthy of an Ice Bath

My favorite scene was with the sea turtles!

Breakout Novel (Your favorite book by a debut author)

I couldn't choose...I loved these both so much.

Best Old-Timer (Your favorite read of the year, published BEFORE 2012)
The Name Of The Star by Maureen Johnson

I'm so glad the sequel is coming out soon!

Most Likely To Make a Grown Man Cry

I know for a fact it made my neighbor cry.

Most Pleasant Surprise (The book you didn't think you'd like, but totally did)

I don't often read dark contemporary YA, so when I saw this was about a schizophrenic character and a missing girl I wasn't sure if it would be too dark for me (I'm a wimp). But I ended up loving this book!

Most Creative Use of a Love Triangle

Eva has feelings for one guy, but she's a clone of another girl...and when that girl dies she has to pretend to be her, and that means being with her boyfriend too. Such a unique love triangle!

Sleeper Hit (Book you found so awesome you wish it had been hyped more)

Both of these books are from smaller presses and weren't super hyped, but they were both awesome, and I hope that my love of them here will convince other people to check them out!

Favorite Outlier (Your favorite MG or adult 2012 book)
A Week To Be Wicked by Tessa Dare

I love all of Tessa Dare's historical romance novels, but this one is so hilarious and sexy and nerdy that it easily became my all time favorite romance ever.

My Category: Favorite Re-Read
Gimme A Kiss by Christopher Pike

I was on a Christopher Pike re-read kick this year, because I was obsessed with his books as a kid. This one is still my favorite of his books.

Did you re-read any books this year? What was your favorite?

  1. Oh man, hmm. What did I re-read this year? I mostly re-read only if the next book in a series was out, so GRACELING, DELIRIUM, and DIVERGENT--a tough list to pick from. I also re-read GREAT EXPECTATIONS over the summer with a few of my most dedicated students--so maybe that would be my choice, even if it's not YA.

  2. Well, this reader is definitely waking up to FREAKS ARE US. I have added it to the ever-growing TBR. :)

My favorite re-read - I don't reread often, but I did reread THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER and fell in love with it all over again. :)

Have a wonderful holiday! So glad you could participate!

  3. Hmmm I re-read ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS several times (I first read it in January...) and I reread some Judy Blume books.

I´ve never heard of FREAKS ARE US before, so I do need to add it to my TBR :D

    Thanks so much for sharing!

  4. "Romance Most Worthy of an Ice Bath: Something Like Normal

My favorite scene was with the sea turtles!"

This is up there with one of the best things you've ever written. Sea turtles are so hot.

I reread a few books for my book club: Fifth Business, Waiting for Godot, and The Great Gatsby. Nothing YA, although I did reread TFiOS up until a certain page and then I had to stop reading or I'd cry again.

  5. You have a number of books here that I really need to read already. I think you're probably right about TFIOS and CODE NAME VERITY likely being contenders for the Printz. Like you, I'd be surprised if it went to a different book (and I haven't even read either of them). As for re-reads, I think I'm overdue for an ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS re-read. :)

  6. I DID re-read a couple books this year and now that I think about it, my Goodreads 2012 is inaccurate because I forgot to change the date on a few of them!

I re-read THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER, ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS, and THE HUNGER GAMES

  7. I do try and get a few re-reads in every year, kind of as my constant I suppose. I re-read If I Stay and Where She Went, Between Shades of Grey and Delirium (for Pandemonium release).

That cover for The Friday Society is just great. I'm waiting for the pb release and I'm really hoping the cover stays the same! TFiOS!!! T_T I totally agree, that one's going to be BIG(ger). Still haven't read Code Name Verity though I'm a huge historical fiction fan...

  8. Oh man, I loved CLARITY, so I really should check out PERCEPTION. And my favorite re-read was ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS, for sure!

  9. The love triangle in The Lost Girl sounds so awesome. I'll have to look into that one!

I re-read for like the fifth time Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith - definitely one of my favorite books ever.

  10. I love how many awards you gave you THE FAULT IN OUR STARS! And you've convinced me I need to read CODE NAME VERITY and ENCARNATE.

Recently I reread DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE, and I feel like I'm always rereading POISON STUDY --I never get tired of that book.

  12. Thank you so much for posting this list! I really enjoyed The Fault In Our Stars, as well--it made me a John Green fan, for sure! I'll definitely check out some of the others you spoke of. I love reading books that are so highly recommended, and you're descriptions of what you loved about them have me excited to seek them out!

  13. So after reading this, I decided to get A Week to be Wicked on my Kindle and I finished it this afternoon. It was everything you said and now I have to read the others because I need more Colin!
