Only now paranormals are dying, and Evie's dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She soon realizes that there may be a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths. So much for normal.
(Note: I removed a sentence from the official blurb which I thought was too spoilery.)
Just when you think you cannot possibly read any more books about vampires, werewolves, or fairies, Kiersten White's debut novel Paranormalcy comes along to change your mind.
Paranormalcy is a fun, fast-paced, original book full of action, mystery, and romance. Evie is a kick ass teen who works for a group that rounds up and regulates paranormal creatures all over the world (think Men in Black). With her blinged out pink taser and her ability to see through glamours Evie is an important asset to the IPCA, even though she just wants to live a normal teenage life with high school lockers and prom dates.
But when paranormals start showing up dead and no one can figure why, Evie is sucked into the mystery and has to do something about it. On top of that, she also has to deal with a new boy keeping secrets from the IPCA and an old faerie boyfriend who will NOT leave her alone.
The romance in this book was well done, and I liked that there wasn't a real love triangle. Instead, Evie's ex was creepy and scary, and every time he showed up I wanted to yell at Evie to run. The mythology behind the different paranormals was fresh and intriguing, and I was glad to meet new creatures and encounter others we don't see very often. The midpoint of the book really spun things sideways (in a good way), and I was happy the ending wrapped up most of the story - no cliffhanger ending here!
Kiersten White is definitely a YA author to watch, with a great blog that other aspiring authors should follow. She worked hard to promote Paranormalcy in fun and original ways, and it paid off - Paranormalcy debuted at #7 on the New York Times bestseller list!
As an example of fun promotion, Kiersten and her critique partner Natalie Whipple (who also has a great blog) both held contests for people to post photos of Paranormalcy. Natalie's contest was to get a shot of the book in the wild, which for me meant my office, definitely the wildest place I've ever visited.

Kiersten's contest asked for a picture of the book at home with its new owner. I had my husband take a shot of me in one of my favorite reading spots with my best helpers. (Note: try to ignore how bad I look here in my pajamas and polar bear robe.)

There is still time to enter the above contests if you have a copy of the book! And you should definitely get one - I read an ARC of Paranormalcy and liked it so much I had to get my own copy of the hardcover (which is beautiful).
If you like paranormal romance or were a big fan of Buffy you should definitely check out Paranormalcy by Kiersten White!
